The Professorship of American Studies/Cultural and Media Studies is excited to announce a guest lecture by Elaine Roth, Professor of Film Studies and Interim Chair of the English Department at Indiana University South Bend. Professor Roth will speak about “Civic Sentimentality in Epidemic Media,” examining the employment of sentimentality as a rhetorical device in fictional representations of epidemics. Among others, she will discuss the 2011 film Contagion, directed by Steven Soderbergh, and the popular series The Last of Us (2023), adapted from the video game of the same name, whose second season is set to premiere in 2025.

A screening of Contagion (2011) will be offered on Monday, November 25, 2024, 6-8 pm. If you are interested in attending the screening, please contact Florian Zitzelsberger (florian.zitzelsberger@uni-passau.de) for more information. For the lecture itself, no prior registration is necessary.
