Bachelor's and master's theses
Preparation course "Wissenschaftstheorie und interkulturelles Forschungsdesign für Bachelor-Studierende"
Students who would like to write a Bachelor's thesis at our chait are encouraged to take part in the course: "Wissenschaftstheorie und interkulturelles Forschungsdesign für Bachelor-Studierende" (Philosophy of Science and Intercultural Research Design for Bachelor's Students). This course provides students with a basic overview over the structure of a bachelor's thesis, the writing process, as well as the methods that come into question.
Please check whether writing your thesis at the chair is explicitly possible according to your study and examination regulations. According to the 2014 study and examination regulations (StuPO), it is not possible to supervise a final thesis in BA European Studies, as intercultural communication is not part of the regular subject canon in module group B. Students are responsible for checking whether credits can be transferred. If you are unsure, please contact the degree programme coordinator.
Writing a thesis - Information on data collection processes and data analysis
For students who would like to write a thesis at the Chair of Intercultural Communication, a a one-week academic course is offered every semster ("wissenschaftliche Übung"), which familiarises students with the various methods of academic work (interviewing, (participant) observation, literature analysis, etc.) and is aimed at students who would like to start writing their thesis soon. It gives an insight into different methods and students are given the opportunity to test them. In addition, this semester there is a bi-weekly supporting course on the evaluation of interview material, which all students that work empirically are encouraged to attend. On the website of the subject information service "Kulturwirtschaft" of the university library you will also find further helpful information and a contact person for questions regarding literature searches (https://www.ub.uni-passau.de/suchen-finden/fachinformation/kulturwirtschaft/).
Preparing a thesis
For initial information about the supervision process and to discuss topic ideas, please use the group consultation hours offered several times a semester (dates under News).
Due to the high number of (similar) enquiries, we kindly ask you to refrain from contacting us about this outside of the collective consultation hours (neither by telephone, e-mail or during normal consultation hours)!
As of summer semester 2018, attendance of the academic exercise is a prerequisite for writing a thesis at the Chair of Intercultural Communication. The course can be found under the number 48553 (Wissenschaftliche Übung) in Stud.ip.
Bachelor's theses cannot include an empirical part due to the short time frame and the small scope (cf. study and examination regulations). On the other hand, empirical work is desired for Master's theses.
