Understanding the Cultural Mind – Culturally Specific Keywords
To celebrate the recognition of the bachelor’s degree in Cultural and Business Studies as the second-best degree course in Germany by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft, Cultural and Business Studies students at the University of Passau are organising a public student event series on the topics of their programme. Under the title 'Understanding the Cultural Mind', they relate the experiences of their cultural spaces to new findings in intercultural research. The events are open to all interested visitors. Representatives of the media are also welcome. The cabaret duo 'Buschtrommel' from Münster, who will introduce the audience to the peculiarities of German culture in anecdotes, will open the event in lecture theatre 5 (Faculty of Business, Economics and Information Systems, Innstraße 27) at 8 pm on the 24th October 2012. Every Wednesday from 8 pm onwards until the 5th December, students will be presenting their personal intercultural experiences from different cultural areas in lecture theatre 6 (Innstraße 27). From Spain, the global expedition leads across the USA to Indonesia. The countries are illuminated from a historical, political, linguistic and cultural perspective. 'The aim of the event is to develop a greater awareness of the characteristics of different cultural areas. Cultural keywords help to understand the impact and consequences of cultural development,' says co-organiser and KuWi student, Theresa Graml. The students are supported by Professor Christoph Barmeyer, Chair of Intercultural Communication: 'It is important that the complex field of interculturality is not reduced to superficial 'how-to' suggestions, but that we include the logics and backgrounds of cultural systems and societies in their entirety. Cultural keywords rooted in social history can provide valuable impulses and interesting insights.' Admission to all events is free.
